Obituary for John Calvin Manning
John Calvin Manning Oct. 20, 1929-March 17, 2016
John Manning, 86, of Brookings died on March 17, 2016.
He was born nine days before the start of the Great Depression on Oct. 20, 1929, in Los Angeles, to John and Mabel Manning.
He graduated from Wilson High School in 1947, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1951.
Mr. Manning proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was deployed to Germany for the majority of his service. Following his honorable discharge, Mr. Manning had a long, distinguished career working for the County of Los Angeles Agriculture Department. During his 37-year tenure, he achieved multiple promotions and served as chief deputy commissioner of agriculture for the last 12 years of his career.
John leaves behind a lasting legacy of being faithful and true to his family and friends. He married the love of his life, Margaret Stagno, on Dec. 29, 1951 and for 65 years he was a devoted husband and friend to his wife who always adored him. John lived a wonderful life filled with family, friends, hunting and fishing. For many years, you could find John and Margaret salmon fishing on the Rouge River and spending time with their friends at Indian Creek RV Park.
John’s survivors include his wife Margaret of Brookings; daughter Cindy Lazaro of Lompoc, California; son and daughter-in-law John and Robin Manning of Rancho Cucamonga, California; grandsons Frank Lazaro of Bakersfield, California and Nicholas Lazaro of Lompoc; granddaughter Amy Byerly of Rancho Cucamonga; and nine great-grandchildren.
