Obituary for Jimmie Ree Vandiver
Jimmie Ree Vandiver, aged 86, died peacefully on January 14, 2015 in Brookings, Oregon. She is the daughter of Virgil Dossett and Reathe Rutland Walters. Jimmie was born in the small town of Collins, Mississippi on March 15, 1928. Her cousin Joyce Bailey remembers her as one of her favorite relatives for her kind spirit and southern charm. Jimmie married the love of her life, Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Charles Joyce. They travelled extensively and were stationed at a variety of Air Force bases in the continental United States as well as overseas. She particularly enjoyed travelling in France, Spain, Portugal and Germany. Jimmie took great pride in raising her children and at her passing she had seventeen grandchildren. In her younger years, Jimmie attended a business college and later studied Interior Design. She collected antiques throughout her life, and spent countless hours researching the attributes, origin and era of each piece. Jimmie had a way with children. She lived in Gulfport Mississippi for many years, and Miss Jimmie’s House was a favorite for the neighbor kids. She had a good sense of humor, and her southern accent made her deep laugh sound like a melody that was both welcoming and contagious. Jimmie dearly loved her mother Reathe and is survived by her brother, Arnold Walters of Knoxville, Tennessee; her daughters Bridgette “Silva” of Brandon, Florida and Sara of Temple, Texas; sons Charlie of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dana Alan of Crescent City, California and Bradford of Spokane, Washington. A celebration of life will be held for Jimmie, in October, at the Rutland family cemetery in Collins, Mississippi. Please contact Jack and Verna Bryant (601) 765-3127 for details.
