Obituary for Lyla Campbell
Lyla Campbell, Ph.D. June 20, 1937 - March 13, 2010 Lyla Campbell, Ph.D., passed away in Crescent City, CA on March 13, 2010. She was 72. Lyla was born June 20, 1937 in Southgate, CA to George and Glora (Bruce) Campbell. She grew up in California. She graduated from UCLA in 1971 with a Ph.D. and became a licensed psychologist and sex therapist. She worked as Associate Chief of Staff for the VA Medical Center in Sepulveda, CA and also held an academic appointment at the UCLA School of Medicine. During her tenure at the VA, Lyla developed many different training and education programs from psychology and sexuality to geriatrics and served on multiple national task forces. She traveled extensively visiting more than 53 countries; her travels inspired her interest in the arts and jewelry design. Featured four times at Neiman-Marcus, her Gem Power Designs adorned stars on the TV show Dynasty and were featured in the LA Times fashion section. Lyla was also a poet, wildlife photographer and was even writing her own novel and screenplay. Survivors include her daughter and constant companion, Shelley Bates of Burbank, CA, sister, Jan Roy of Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert in 2005. A celebration of Lyla's life will be held at a later date in her native southern California.
