In Loving Memory of our Beloved Patriarch Raymond “Ray” Meza Garcia. Raymond, 91 of Brookings, OR passed away peacefully in his home March 31, 2021. Ray was born to Lorenza and Frank Garcia in Santa Monica, CA. He was one of 11 children, 9 boys and 2 girls.
Hew grew up in Santa Monica where his first job was selling newspapers on the pier with his brothers as his father had passed away when he was only 4 years old. He later worked in the produce department in a grocery store. After he graduated from Santa Monica High School, he joined the United States Navy during the Korean War and achieved GM3 on the USS WALKE DD723. He earned the Combat Action Medal, Korean Defense Ribbon (6 Bronze stars), China Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and was Honorably Discharged in 1954.
When he returned to the States, he found the love of his life waiting for him. On June 28, 1955 he married Marie Elena Garcia and raised 3 children together as practicing Catholics. Their love was forever, and it spilled over into their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. They moved to Brookings, OR in 1993.
Ray was a Journeyman Plumber by trade and had several successful plumbing business ventures in California and Oregon. He loved the outdoors, especially the ocean, having lived most of his life on the West Coast. He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. He was an active member of the USS WALKE Association, a proud life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion (serving as Commander in Brookings, OR and Greenville, CA) as well as a former member of the Lions Club.
Raymond was preceded in death by his son Raymond A. Garcia, 8 brothers and 1 sister. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Marie Garcia, son Stephen Garcia (Sharon) of Elko, Nevada, daughter Maria (Julian) Savedra of Brookings, OR, 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and his sister Lee Johnston (George) of Los Angeles, CA.
Raymond will be remembered for his beard, sense of pride, humor and giving nature. His final request was to be laid to rest with a private family service after receiving his final rights. In lieu of flowers, please support our Veterans.
