Obituary for Roland "Ron" Lansing
Roland “Ron” Lansing, 97, of Brookings died on December 9th in his home.
He was born on May 5th 1919 in Denver, CO to Mahlon and Sadie Lansing. The family moved to Los Angeles when Roland was 6 years old.
He Graduated from Manual Arts High School lettering in Gymnastics and later attended the University of Colorado at Boulder. Roland became a Los Angeles City Fireman in 1941 and then enlisted in the United States Army Paratroopers shortly after December 7th 1941. Before going overseas, in 1943, he married Darlene Ellis in Bennettsville, SC. Roland fought in Italy, France and the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He received 2 purple hearts and a bronze star. After the war he returned to the Los Angeles Fire Department and soon after he and Darlene had 2 children. Roland and Darlene had places in Palm Springs and Lake Nacimiento where they golfed, boated and fished. In 1981 they moved to Brookings to be with family and spent a lot of time going to their grandchildren’s sporting events, etc. He and Darlene enjoyed being able to watch their grandson Matt’s college football games on-line. In their later years they watched a lot of football and Nascar with their grandson Josh. Roland was a caring and generous man. We will miss him!
Roland’s wife Darlene of 69 years died in 2012. He is survived by his daughter Linda Overlin of Brookings, his son Mike Lansing and wife Julie of Playa del Rey, CA. His grandchildren Tiffany Eldridge of Brookings, Josh Overlin and wife Ember of Brookings, Matt Overlin and wife Amy of Monmouth, OR and Diego Benatina of Playa del Rey. His great grandchildren Hannah Fallert of Brookings, Phoebe Eldridge of Brookings, Carver Overlin of Brookings, Jadyn, Demi, Ozzy and Eve Overline of Monmouth and great great grandchildren Grace and Sam Landers of Brookings. Roland is preceded in death by his wife Darlene, father and mother Mahlon and Sadie, brother Phil and sisters Ruth, Helen, Jean and Edith. We love you Dad, Gramp and Pop!
