Obituary for Dave R. Hopkins
Dave R. Hopkins Dec. 26, 1946 – July 27, 2016
Dave R. Hopkins, 69, passed away on July 27, 2016 at his home in Brookings. He was born Dec. 26, 1946 in Longview, Wash. to parents Robert A. and June Hopkins.
The Hopkins family moved to Brookings in June of 1959 and Dave graduated from Brookings-Harbor High School in 1965. He was drafted into the Army in 1966 and served in Viet Nam.
Dave married Rose Rush in August, 1970 and they had two children whom they raised in Brookings.
Dave worked in the logging industry for numerous outfits; he retired from his favorite job with Eslinger Logging in 2008 after working for them since 1989.
Hunting with his son, Jay and Rick Eslinger was one of Dave’s greatest pleasures and they made many trips and even more memories over the years.
Dave loved to play. Almost anything or any kind of game. He loved playing Scrabble with mom and with his sister after their mom’s passing. He loved golf and yard games, board games and Bingo. He was an avid reader and read voraciously until his failing health prevented reading. He then switched to books on tape.
Most of all, David loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Rose; daughter Stacy (Carl) Rust and his son Jay (Dawna) Hopkins. He is also survived by his sister Randi (Jack) Darger. He was “Papa” to his grandchildren, Amber (Jerry) Espinosa, Aubree Hopkins, Cassidy Harrell, Jack Harrell and Jessica Hopkins. He also is survived by his two great grandsons, Jace Espinosa and Radley Harrell. Dave is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. His entire family lives in Brookings and he was blessed to have them near.
Dave was preceded in death by his dad and mom and his brother, Larry. Dave had a huge heart and many good friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016 at Living Waters Foursquare Church, 1136 Fifield St. in Brookings.
