Obituary for Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Gaskill
Woodrow “Woody” Gaskill passed away at a care facility in Medford, Ore. on September 14, 2012. He was 78. Woody was born June 2, 1934 in Downer, New Jersey to John and Luella (Clayton) Gaskill. His mother’s death when Woody was 7 left him to be raised in orphanages. He learned to be a machinist out of high school and moved to California to pursue his trade. Woody married JoAnn Baer in 1960. They would live in California until moving to the northern Oregon coast. Woody worked for the Federal Government as a quality control inspector. After retiring, he worked for the Lincoln County School District where he also coached girls’ softball and basketball. He was so loved by the students at the high school that they dedicated their yearbook to him one year. Woody also fished commercially while living in Newport. His real passion in life, though, was his faith. Much of his time was spent in service to the Lord and in carrying out the Great Commission. Woody served as a deacon faithfully in every church he was a part of. He also served on the local board of Gideon’s International distributing bibles all over the world. Woody married Margaret Joan Brown in Brookings on October 22, 1998. They served the church together as deacons, greeters, prayer ministers and helping with the youth, most recently at the Smith River Baptist Church. When he wasn’t volunteering, Woody enjoyed painting and studying the Bible. Survivors include his wife, Joan of Brookings, children, Dora Fujinami and her husband, Ken of Santa Maria, Calif., Debra Cutsor and her husband Richard of Glenpool, Okla., Daniel Gaskill of Waldport, Ore., Dennis Gaskill and his wife Cyndi of Newport, Ore., stepchildren, Dawn Dunham and her husband, Michael of Central Point, Ore., Lance Brown of Brookings, Christopher Brown and his wife, Maria of Spokane, Wash., granddaughters, Selena and Brittany Gaskill, great granddaughter, Seana Gaskill and numerous step grandchildren and step great grandchildren. Woody was preceded in death by his first wife, JoAnn in 1996, and four brothers. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideon’s International – Curry County Camp, 326 N. Hazel St., Brookings, OR 97415. A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Smith River Baptist Church, 340 Highland Avenue in Smith River.
