Obituary for William "Bill" Fischer
William "Bill" Fischer Jan. 9, 1942 - Jan. 7, 2010 William "Bill" Fischer passed away two days shy of his 68th birthday at his home in Harbor on Jan. 7, 2010 with his family by his side. Bill, as family and friends knew him, was born January 9, 1942 in Nampa, ID to Herbert and Ina Belle (Jones) Fischer. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1959. He graduated from Naval Dental School in 1961 and then received an honorable discharge in 1965. Bill owned and operated dental laboratories in Maryland, Boise, Idaho, Florence & Brookings-Harbor, OR. He married Heather Butay on September 10, 1999 in Winnemucca, NV. After moving to Brookings and not being able to find their particular type of smoking tobacco, Bill and Heather opened The Wacky Tobacconist in Harbor. They added a second location in Gold Beach in 2006. Bill liked to travel; he and Heather had been to Jamaica twice, the Bahamas, Mexico, Hawaii. He also liked to gamble and was always very lucky. He enjoyed working in the store and visiting with the customers; he was very insightful and people felt very comfortable sharing their life stories with him. He was charming, intelligent, witty, and always happy to lend an ear. He was very dedicated to his work, whether it was his dental lab or in the smoke shop. He was an entrepreneur from a very young age. He had many endeavors; from going door to door sharpening knives and scissors, to picking up the leftover potatoes from the farms and going door to door selling them, to buying candy and soda pop from the store and taking them to farm workers and charging a markup, because, back then, they did not have soda and candy machines. Survivors include his wife, Heather of Harbor, children, Ray William Fischer of Boise, Idaho, Steve Fischer of Fresno, CA, Tony Fischer of Eagle, ID, John Fischer of Eagle, ID, Jennifer Shafer of Annapolis, MD, Kelly Florentino of Hawaii, brother, Herb Fischer of Portland, OR, sister, Donna Willis of Idaho, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A celebration of Bill's life was held Saturday, January 9, 2010 at the Wacky Tobacconist.
