Obituary for Vern Owen Vick
Vern Owen Vick May 13, 1947 – Nov. 21, 2017
Vern Owen Vick passed away on November 21, 201 at his home in Brookings, Oregon surrounded by his family. Vern had been ill the last couple of years with congestive heart failure and renal complications. He requested no funeral, so the family and a few friends gathered for a graveside service on Saturday November 25th at W.J. Ward Cemetery in Brookings, OR. He will rest in peace by fir trees, deer and an ocean view.
Vern was born to Alice and Woodrow Vick in Stockton, California. Vern attended Woodland, California schools and after graduating in 1965 from Woodland High School he attended trade school where he graduated with his general contractor’s license. He had a gift for working with wood. He was a true craftsman.
Vern worked for Endeavor Homes and later established Victory Builders. He was proud of the many homes he built in and around the Woodland and Sacramento area. He then had a short stint running Tucker & Vick Men’s Clothing Store. Vern went on to work as the Maintenance Supervisor for the Yolo County Housing Authority until retirement.
Vern married Janeen (Aubrey) in 1988 and they lived in Woodland for many years while they completed their careers. Vern and Janeen loved old cars and joined the local car clubs getting involved in several car shows and cruises. They also loved to Rock and Roll and attended many of the local dances showing off their techniques. They loved their Jack Russell dogs and raised a few litters over the years.
Upon retiring, the Vick’s purchased five acres of wooded property in Brookings, OR and proceeded to design and build their own home by themselves. Vern loved his beautiful home with the surrounding trees, wildlife wandering through and his favorite ocean view. He loved working in his garden alongside his wife and grew their own fruit and vegetables. He loved chopping his own firewood and had a gift for building anything out of wood, from homes and decks to tiny intarsia butterflies. He designed and made their kitchen cabinets and myrtle wood center island for their kitchen. He could make magic happen out of wood. Vern could see the beauty of each piece of wood and was very talented.
Vern leaves behind his beloved wife Janeen Vick and her son, James Jordan of Brookings, OR, his first wife Dana Hoover and their two children Jennifer (Doug) Lusk and Cory Vick and his wife (Rachel Leibrock) and two grandchildren, Amanda (Stephen) Judkins of Portland, OR and Chase Harrison of Sacramento, CA. Also surviving are Vern’s sweet mother Alice Vick and brother John (Ellen) Vick and their children Candace Vick and Chris Vick all from Woodland California area. He will be greatly missed by Janeen’s large family, her siblings and in-laws, as well as several nieces and nephews. They all felt a special bond with Vern and loved him so much and he loved them back. Vern always had a hug ready to give.
Janeen and their families will miss Vern and his sweet personality, his wisdom, humor and wit, and his habit of being a friend to all. He was always an honest man and had great integrity in all his work and business dealings. Rest in Peace dear Vern.
