Obituary for Thomas Whalen
Thomas Whalen passed away at a local care facility in Brookings on April 6, 2010. He was 71. Thomas was born in Scotland on April 21, 1938, one of sixteen children to James and Sadie Whalen. He grew up there until coming to the US and enlisting in the Army. He served for three years during the Korean Conflict, being honorably discharged in 1960. Thomas married Twila Jensen in Winnemucca, NV on Dec. 14, 1961. They lived in North Bend where Thomas worked for the plywood mill. They later moved to Alaska where they lived until retiring to Brookings in 1998. Thomas' greatest passion was the Celtic FC Splash, the soccer team in Glasgow that he followed all of his life. In addition to being a member of their fan club, he attended several international soccer conventions. He also enjoyed watching Notre Dame football and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Twila of Brookings, daughters, Vickie Pemberton of Junction City, OR, Jackie Bergrstrom and her husband, Dan of Harrisburg, OR, Linda Dawson of Coos Bay, OR, Mirleen Arnold and her husband, Kim of Medford, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren and twelve surviving brothers and sisters. Thomas was preceded in death by three brothers and sisters. A private family ceremony will be held.
