Obituary for Thomas Fredrick Hayes
Thomas Frederick “Fred” Hayes Aug. 3, 1923 – Sept. 28, 2018 Thomas Frederick “Fred” Hayes passed away peacefully Friday, September 28, 2018, at the age of 95. Fred was born to Thomas Julian and Elizabeth (Price) Hayes on August 3, 1923 near Powers, Oregon on the Hayes ranch. Fred had a zest for life, a lifelong ethic of honesty, hard work, and to take car of others before yourself. If you had a need for anything, Fred would get it, build it, fix it, or give you his. As a Veteran of World War II, Fred served in the United States Army as a Heavy Truck Driver with the 398th Engineer Regiment in Europe. In his later years he told of the most beautiful woman he had ever seen: our Lady Liberty as they sailed back into the harbor after the war. Fred is survived by his son Virgil Hayes, his daughters Eileene Turpin and Janice Hayes Whetstone, and many loved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 54 years, Hilda, his wife Alta, and daughter Theresa Jean. To quote Fred, “It is time to go to bed and let this dark spell pass.” Fred’s wishes were for no memorial service.
