Obituary for Theresa Maxine Kibby-Buckskin
Theresa Buckskin, (68) who will always and forever be in our thoughts and hearts, went to be with her creator on September 4, 2021, in her home in Brookings, Oregon.
She was born August 12, 1953, to Emil and Evelyn Buckskin in Tollhouse, California. She was later adopted by the Kibby family of Smith River, California, in 1957.
One of her most cherished experiences in life was learning to box. She had started boxing at the age of 10 (with her older brothers and sisters) and continued on throughout her early adult life. Theresa had the honor of receiving the name “Princess Red Star” by Sioux Chief White Buffalo Man. She was known as a “true pioneer to getting the sport off the ground” and she was also ranked #2 World Welterweight with the Women’s Boxing Federation in 1977. One of her boxing matches was recorded as the first nationally televised boxing match between women. Along with the sport of boxing, she also enjoyed playing basketball, softball and volleyball.
Later in life, she made a career working with the Tolowa Dee Ni nation. Being employed by the Tolowa Dee Ni nation for 20+ years was a start to new friendships within the office and the Tolowa community. She had started out as a receptionist and was promoted to being the Enrollment Specialist up until her passing. What she loved most about her job was the interaction she had with the members; she enjoyed talking to the elders and reminiscing about the good old days.
Over the years Theresa looked forward to family gatherings, whether it be weekend barbecues, birthdays, small road trips, and especially the holidays. Her eyes lit up when she would go and support her Grandkids during their games of soccer, basketball and track. She was the loudest one cheering them on. They were the highlight of her life. They could always count on her full support in any aspect of their life because she was their number one cheerleader.
She was known as being a warm, strong-hearted, generous, friendly, easy to talk to, stubborn, feisty, diehard loving Mother/Grandmother with a distinguished sense of humor and laugh that will live on in our memories. Her love has shaped us in lasting ways and she will be forever missed as she goes on her journey.
Theresa is survived by her three children: John Kibby, Lawanda Kibby-Haro (Daniel Haro) and Kyle Kibby of Brookings, Oregon. She was exhilarated and honored to be come a Grandmother “Grammy” to Sonia Haro-Hernandez (Jose Hernandez), Rosa Haro (Tony Pacheco), Leonel Haro, Elias Haro, Danika Scott, Isabella Buckskin and Dekota Buckskin; Great Grandmother to Thiago and Enzo Hernandez-Haro.
She is also survived by sisters and a brother: Darlene Buckskin, Arlene Bunton and Ross Bunton and several nieces and nephews who knew her as “Aunt Wheezy”. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Mike Perez and Roger Buckskin and sister Emily Buckskin-Leach.
