Obituary for Serge Jack Mellon
Serge Jack Mellon
June 18, 1946 – Aug. 5, 2017

Ophir resident Serge Jack Mellon passed away on August 5, 2017 at the age of 71. He was born June 18, 1946 in Los Angeles, California to Jack and Rosario (Vargas) Mellon.

Serge grew up in Beverly Hills, California. At the age of 19 he joined the U. S. Navy, and was a corpsman attached to the Marines while serving four years in Vietnam. He earned several medals including the Purple Heart, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with bronze star. In spite of injuries sustained, he lived a full life and owned his own business.

Over the years, Serge lived along the West Coast, in California and Washington before moving to Hawaii. Coming back to the mainland he lived in Salem and Bend, OR. He married his precious wife Ellen (Turner) Mellon in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, on August 4, 1992 and they had 25 wonderful years together. He was a husband, father, son and friend who greeted all he encountered with a gentle spirit, kindness and grace. He loved his family deeply, and enjoyed spending time with them and especially with his granddaughters. Serge held his friends close to his heart. He lived by the Golden rule and loved all of God’s creation.

Serge and Ellen eventually retired to the Oregon Coast at Ophir. He enjoyed deep sea fishing, walking on the beach and in the forest, and especially looking for agates. He was always accompanied by his faithful companions “Wheezie”, a Shihtzu, and “Snocone”, his cat.

Serge is survived by his wife Ellen, of Ophir, daughters Rebecca Mellon of Salem, Joy Anna Forsythe and her husband Chris of Salem, Becki Moore and her husband David of Redmond, Jessi Givens of Redmond, sons Josh Mellon and his wife Corrine Duncan of Weaverville, North Carolina , Zach Mellon of Folsom, CA, and 6 grandchildren; also by his brother Steve Mellon and his wife Faye of Chehalis, WA. He was preceded in death by his mother Rosario (Mellon) Partridge and her husband Allyn, father Jack Mellon and brother Byron H. Mellon.

The family extends special thanks to the Brookings VA Clinic, Roseburg and Portland VA Hospitals. They also especially wish to thank Dr. Silver and his staff for the tremendous care shown to Serge.

A private service for family and friends will be held at a later date.

Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family. Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net.
