Obituary for Selma Lora Campbell
Selma Lora Campbell passed away at a local care facility in Brookings on January 19, 2012. She was 99. Selma was born September 6, 1912 in Pangburn, Arkansas to Andrew and Artie (Wahl) Gregory. She graduated high school in Pangburn. She married C. Fell Campbell on September 14, 1929. They lived on a farm; Selma later bought a general store, a cotton gin and a grist mill and served as Post Mistress in Shiloh, Arkansas for about 5 years. They then moved to Shirley, Arkansas and leased a shopping center. They added a restaurant and pool hall, grocery store, gas station and jukebox business. When Fell was called to WWII, they sold all the business except the jukebox store, which they later sold after moving to Heber Springs, Arkansas. After the war, the family moved to Brookings where Fell bought a sawmill on Easy Street. Selma worked as his bookkeeper. After that, she worked at US Bank for 9 years and then Western Bank for 12 years. She would work as real estate agent 2 years before retiring. Selma was active for over 60 years with the First Baptist Community Church in Brookings where she taught Sunday school and served as treasurer. She was also active in the Order of the Easter Star and the VFW Auxiliary. Selma enjoyed spending time with her family including all of her grandchildren. She also loved to entertain and with Fell being Mayor of Brookings and a Curry County Commissioner, was called on to do so frequently, including housing then-governor Hatfield. She also liked making needlework afghans. Survivors include her sister, Lola Dews, of Kansas City, Kansas, son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Patsy Campbell of Port Orford, grandchildren, Jimmy Campbell and his wife, Barb, Mike Campbell and his wife, Ruth, great grandchildren, Greg Campbell and his wife, Brittany, Kimberly Campbell and Andrew Campbell, great-great grandchildren, Trentyn, Hunter, Lora, Makenna and Jayden. In addition to her husband, Selma was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Community Church, 607 Pacific Ave., Brookings, OR 97415. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at First Baptist Community Church, 607 Pacific Ave., in Brookings. Rev. Dr. Ken Whitted will officiate. Concluding services and interment will follow at W. J. Ward Memorial Cemetery.
