Obituary for Sandra E. MacCleave
Sandra E. MacCleave July 24, 1943 - Jan. 27, 2011 Sandra E. MacCleave passed away at her home in Brookings on January 27, 2011. She was 67. Sandra was born July 24, 1943 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada to Donald and Dorothy (Bell) MacCleave. The family moved to southern California when Sandra was 10. After high school, she attended and graduated from Santa Barbara City College with an associate degree and, in 1966, from Whittier College with a bachelor's degree. Sandra joined Vista, the domestic Peace Corps, and served in education in New Jersey and California. She returned to college in 1984 at Cal State Northridge where she received her teaching credential. She also attended Cal State Los Angeles and became certified in special education. Sandra taught in Temple City, CA and El Monte, CA before moving to Brookings in 1994 and working as a resource specialist for the Del Norte Unified School District in Crescent City. Her final position before retirement would be teaching grades 1-3 at the Upper Chetco Charter School in Brookings. Sandra retired in June of 2008. Sandra enjoyed volunteering and did so with different organizations including the Chetco Senior Center's Meals-on-Wheels program and with senior respite care. She also enjoyed spending time with her family including card games and many trips up the river, photography and reading. Survivors include her sister, Wendy Sparks of Brookings, niece, Tammie Musser and her husband, Tim of Brookings, nephew, Bill Rae and his fiance, Linda Schumacher of Lawton, OK, great nieces and nephews, Blake and Erynn Musser and Ashley Rae, cousins, Bill and Betty Bell, Robert and Helen Bell, Allison and Glen Wilson, Ann Brown and Ann MacCleave, and Sandra's many friends including, Penny Hughes of Seattle, WA. Sandra was preceded in death by her mother in 1995 and father in 1997. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of Curry County Hospice, PO Box 348, Gold Beach, OR 97444. A celebration of Sandra's life will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 1:00pm at Living Waters Foursquare Church, 1136 Fifield St. in Brookings. Pastor Dwayne Rufener will officiate. A potluck reception will follow at the church.
