Obituary for Ruth L. MacIvor
Ruth Lovona Jenkins MacIvor, born Oct. 6, 1917 to Harvey and Pearl Jenkins in Denver, Colo., passed away April 22, 2014 in Brookings, Ore. Ruth grew up and attended high school in Arvada, Colo. On Nov. 15, 1935, Ruth married Frank H. MacIvor in Denver; they had one daughter, Lovona Jean. In 1941 they moved to California, then to Redondo Beach during World War II. Ruth worked as an engineering draftsman at McDonnell Douglas for 10 years. She received many awards from the city of Redondo Beach, Calif., for her volunteer work as Commissioner of Recreation and Parks. She was an honorary life member of the California Association of Parks and Recreations Commissioners and Boards.
In 1977, Ruth and Frank moved to Brookings, Ore. Frank passed away in 1982 after 48 years of marriage. In 1983, Ruth started traveling with the Teens With A Purpose, Inc., helping the missionaries in building churches, schools, bridges, and whatever else was needed. She travelled to a different location each summer, including Hawaii, Indonesia, Africa, Rwanda, Brussels, and the Philippines.
At home, Ruth was active in the Presbyterian Church. She was a volunteer at the Chamber of Commerce for several years. She also was head of the Harbor Fire Dept. Board and the Harbor Water Company Board. She filled a life-long dream of taking a cruise to Alaska in the summer of 2012.
Ruth is survived by her daughter Lovona Maple; grandchildren Scott and Susan Maple of Greeley, Colo., Kelly Maple of Central Point, Ore., Kathy and Howard Watkins of Grants Pass, Ore., and Daniel and April Maple of southern Calif.; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her grandson John Maple, and her husband Frank.
There will be a celebration of life service on Tuesday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at the Brookings Presbyterian Church, 540 Pacific Ave, Brookings, OR 97415, with a reception to follow. Pastor David Hunter is officiating. Graveside services will be Saturday, May 3 at 2 p.m. at W.J. Ward Memorial Cemetery, 1035 7th Street, Brookings, OR 97415, with Pastor Steve Alexander officiating.
