Obituary for Ruby Darlene Sanborn
Ruby Darlene Sanborn born September 11, 1931 heaven bound May 10, 2016
Our wife, mom, grandma, great grandma and friend went home to heaven this past week and though our hearts ache, one day we know we will see that smile and feel those loving arms around us once again. Born in Corning, Kansas to Lester and Mae Watkins, Ruby and her family moved to North Long Beach, CA in 1935. She attended elementary and middle school there, taking up the cello and piano in 4th grade. She eventually was 1st chair cellist in an all city orchestra for students up to 10th grade. The family then moved to Compton, CA followed by another move to Hilmar, CA. Ruby graduated in 1949 from Hilmar High School where she had met her future husband, Jim Sanborn. She attended Modesto Junior College for secretarial training while working as a nanny, then as a teletype tape perforator for the Turlock Daily Journal. Ruby and Jim were married June 6, 1953 and their son Mike (James Michael) was born the following year. Soon to follow were daughters Janie (1956), Julie (1957), Joyce (1958) and Joanette (1960). In 1965 the Sanborn's moved to Ben Lomond, CA eventually building and owning several coin-op laundries. They sold the businesses and retired in 1980. Over the years they had homes in Twain Harte, CA, Kelseyville, CA and various towns in Santa Cruz County, CA. In 1995 they made their home in Brookings. First and foremost Ruby loved her family. She was never happier than when hogging - she said "holding exclusively" - the youngest great grandbaby. Her organizational skills in marshalling the troups for family meals, weddings and holidays was legendary. She enjoyed music, playing games and rooting for the Ducks and Golden State Warriors. Ruby is survived by her husband of nearly 63 years, Jim Sanborn, son Mike Sanborn (Carolyn) of Scotts Valley, CA, daughters Janie Beverly (Tim) of Ben Lomond, CA, Julie Vandermeer (Cy) of Brookings and Joanette Brackett (Paul) of Brookings. She was preceded in death by her daughter Joyce Barnes (Jim). Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and their spouses plus 26 great grandchildren - with two more on the way! A memorial celebration is planned for 3 p.m. on Monday, May 16 at Smith River Baptist Church, Steve Alexander officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to Coastal Home Health & Hospice are preferred.
