Obituary for Robert David Chapman
Robert Chapman known as “Chappy” to his friends, passed away peacefully in Gold Beach on February 10, 2016. He was born May 22, 1939 in Palo Alto, CA and raised in San Carlos, CA.
Following graduation from Sequoia High School in Redwood City, Chappy spent three years in the Navy, stationed at Whidbey Island, WA. He was a member of a 3-man flight crew for a Douglas A3-D Skywarrior, based on a Navy Aircraft Carrier. He then went to work as a Warranty Manager for Case Tractors. The job took him to Greece for four years and Singapore for two more years. No longer wishing to live abroad, he took a job with United Rentals, living in Pleasanton, CA for 19 years. He moved to Brookings in 2001, working at the United Rentals office in Crescent City. He retired in 2002.
When he returned to the United States from his time overseas, Chappy re-developed a passion for hot rods, especially ’32 Ford Roadsters. He proudly served as Past President, retired, impeached of the “Danville Dukes”. There were no dues, elected officers, etc. You were a “Duke” if you showed up on Saturday morning for breakfast and had a hot rod. He was proud to be a “Duke”.
Chappy is survived by two children, Debra Rosander and David Chapman, two grandchildren, A.J. and Natalie Rosander, sister Linda Mandy, numerous nieces and nephews and his life-partner and fiancé of the last 14 years, Sally Ann. Although they had different personalities they were deeply committed to one another and spent 14 wonderful years together.
No local services are planned. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family. Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net.
