Obituary for Robert "Bob" M. Delehanty
Robert “Bob” Delehanty passed away at his home in Gold Beach, Ore. on April 16, 2012. He was 86. Bob was born January 21, 1926 in Hammond, Ind. to Albert and Avis (Abbott) Delehanty. He grew up in Hammond, playing football for Hammond High. His senior year, following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Bob enlisted in the US Army and began basic training even prior to graduation. He served during WWII, his last assignment being that of a B-29 gunner flying missions out of Okinawa. He returned to the US and, on the GI Bill, attended and received his degree from the University of Colorado. While going to school, Bob found work at Safeway stores as a food clerk. He quickly advanced to a management position. Over his 35 year career with Safeway Bob opened new stores in Colorado, Arizona and California. He married Shirley Doll in Kauai, Hawaii on January 18, 1983. They moved to Paradise, Calif. where they built their retirement home. For nine years they square danced with the Paradise Ridge Runners, even taking a trip in 1988 to Germany to dance in the First German-American Square Dance event. They later sold their home to become full time RVers traveling to all 50 states and several provinces of Canada. In addition to dancing, Bob loved fishing. He and Shirley eventually settled in Gold Beach in 2001. Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Shirley of Gold Beach, step-children, Carolyn Pierini and her husband, John, John Doll, Mark Doll and his wife, Aleida, Marianne Scott and her husband, Ken, brothers, Daniel Delehanty of Ohio, Edward Delehanty of Virginia, sister, Marilynn May of Indiana, 19 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his brothers, James, Thomas and Richard and stepsons, James and Thomas Doll. At his request, no public ceremony will be held.
