Obituary for Robert "Bob" J. Nowlin
Robert “Bob” James Nowlin, 88, passed away on April 27, 2012 at Good Samaritan-Curry Village in Brookings, Oregon. Bob was born June 9, 1923 in Lakeside, Oregon. Growing up in Langlois and Ophir, Bob lived his entire life in Curry County except for his military career. Bob was a firm believer in hard work. He started milking cows at the age of 8 and did some mechanic and mill work before starting to drive a logging truck at 18. In World War II, Bob was a member in the 17th and 82nd Airborne Divisions and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Bob returned to Ophir to drive logging trucks and bulldozers to build logging roads. He married Betty Robinson in 1947 and they raised three girls and a boy. The call of the ocean came in 1954 when Bob started commercial fishing out of Port Orford. He continued to fish and own several different boats until his retirement in 1988. Bob is survived by his children Jane Hayashi of Brookings, Cheri Hatmaker of Tigard, Jack Nowlin of Warrenton and Vickie Martin of Port Orford. Other survivors include his sister Ellen Moore of Orphir and his brother Lee “Pinky” Nowlin of Blue Lake, CA. Bob also has 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Betty in 1999. A graveside service was held on Friday, May 4, 2012 at the Port Orford Cemetery.
