Obituary for Robert "Bob" A. Basham
Robert A. “Bob” Basham passed away at a local care facility in Brookings on September 20, 2013. He was 88. Bob was born in Oakland, Calif. on June 28, 1925 to John C. and Ruth (Patrick) Basham. He grew up in Walnut Creek, Calif. In 1943, Bob enlisted in the US Navy where he served until being honorably discharged in 1946. He then began what would be a more than forty year career in the banking industry, retiring from Puget Sound Bank in 1990. Bob was a graduate of the American Institute of Banking. He was a former chairman of the Redevelopment Agency in Long Beach, Calif. and Senior Staff Commodore for the Long Beach Yacht Club. He was also Staff Commodore for the Little Ships Fleet of Long Beach. Bob was an active commercial, multiengine pilot for most of his adult life. He was a member of the Quiet Birdmen Medford Hanger and a former governor of the QB’s. He and his wife, Mary Lou, whom he married in Long Beach on March 17, 1977, moved to Brookings in 1990 where Bob was active for 15 years with the Cape Ferrelo Fire Department, having served as Captain. He was also chairman of the Curry County Crime Stoppers and a member of the Marine Corps League, Calvin E. Murphy Detachment #578 where he served on the honor guard firing detail. Survivors include his daughter and sons-in-law, Cindy and Jon Reuter of Murrieta, Calif., and Charlotte and Roy Walker of Victorville, Calif., nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two great-great grandsons, sister, Anne Reed and her husband Clarence of Redding, Calif. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou, in 2010 and two sons. Private interment was held at W. J. Ward Memorial Cemetery. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
