Obituary for Robert Allen Gordon
Robert A. Gordon passed away in Crescent City, CA on Feb. 13, 2010. He was 87. Robert was born January 11, 1923 in Bandon, OR to Jess and Augusta (Bush) Gordon. The family later settled in San Jose, CA. Robert graduated from high school in San Jose, after which he began working in a machine shop. Robert later went to work for NACA (later to become NASA) at Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, CA in their mechanical and instrument section. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 during WWII and served until being honorably discharged in 1945 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following his military service, Robert continued his career with NASA at Ames Research Center, he manufactured and designed instruments for aircraft and the space program. He would do that for forty years, retiring as the supervisor of the instrument section. Robert married Helen Dunlap in San Jose, CA on September 30, 1956. Soon after, they made their home in Los Gatos, CA for 41 years where they resided until moving to Harbor, OR in 2001. Robert was an avid sports and outdoorsman. Whether he was bird hunting, scuba diving, snow skiing, shooting his bow or fly fishing with flies he tied and the rods he made, he loved to be in the outdoors. He also became very fond of retriever dogs which he trained for service in bird hunting. Robert and Helen enjoyed photography and even had their own dark room for developing pictures. He was a member of the San Jose Ski Club, a group of friends with a cabin at Yosemite. He was also a past member of the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Helen of Harbor, daughter, Sandra Dusza and her husband, Frank of Carbondale, CO, son, Carl Gordon and his wife, Marilyn of Grass Valley, CA, grandchildren, Trevor Dusza, Jessica Schrader and Jared Gordon, great grandchildren, Lillyan, Haley, Kylee and Ashlyn Schrader. No memorial service is planned. Robert will be laid to rest with military honors at a National Cemetery to be determined at a future date.
