Obituary for Richard Lyle Hoffman
Richard Lyle Hoffman of Gold Beach passed away on Oct. 11, 2015 at the age of 90. In honor of his wishes, no services are planned. Richard (Dick) was born in Tillamook on Feb. 7, 1925 to Elmo and Lillian Hoffman. Dick’s mother passed away when he was young. He and his older brother and sister were raised in the Tillamook area by his father and step-mother, Esther Hoffman. Dick married Margie Lee Dye on February 26, 1949 in Bend, Oregon. They celebrated 51 years together before her death in 2000. Together they raised a family and faced life’s challenges. Dick was especially notable for administering his wife’s in-home hemodialysis three times weekly, for 23 years. Dick and Margie moved their family to Gold Beach in 1962 when Dick went to work at U.S. Plywood, which later became Champion International. When Champion closed, Dick went to work at the local Radio Shack. He later retired from Gold Beach Plywood. Dick enjoyed many outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, camping and Sunday “rides in the hills.” He enjoyed working in his workshop, and especially loved watching the local wildlife pass by his house. Dick also loved visiting with friends around town as he ran his daily errands. The Oakland Raiders and the Seattle Mariners have lost a devoted fan. Family was important to Dick, and he enjoyed every opportunity to get together with his children and grandchildren. He was honored to celebrate his 90th birthday with friends and family in February. Dick was an impressively resourceful man. He had a sly sense of humor and an unforgettable roaring laugh. He was well known and respected in his community. His family and friends will miss him dearly. Dick is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, sister and son, Sidney. He is survived by his children: Rhonda Hoffman of Salem, Karen (Marc) Jones of Gold Beach, Cathy (Ron) McHenry of Keizer, Dennis (Kathy) Hoffman of Gold Beach and Patsy Rhoades of Blue Lake, Calif., as well as his grandchildren: Hannah Hoffman, Robyn Andrade, Eric Hoffman, Billy Rhoades, Garrett Hoffman, Emily Jones and Trevor Hoffman, and great-grandson Ryan Rhoades. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
