Raymond J. Chew passed away in Crescent City on January 8, 2011. He was 91. Raymond was born April 12, 1919 in Alviso, CA to John and Constance (Soares) Schu. He spent his childhood there. Raymond later moved to Hawaii where he serviced with the Merchant Marines and the Hawaiian Army. He was working as a longshoreman in Pearl Harbor at the time of the Japanese attack. Raymond lived there for 11 years before returning to California where he worked as an upholsterer and, later, as a carpenter installing acoustic ceilings. Raymond married Frances Martinez in 1946. In 1994, he purchased a bait and tackle shop in Klamath, CA and named it Little Ray’s Tackle Box. The family lived there seasonally to operate the shop until permanently moving to Del Norte County in 2005. Raymond loved hunting and building scull boats. He was a master duck hunter and taught others how to hunt – he even duck hunted Lake Earl at the age of 89. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Frances of Crescent City, sons Owen Chew and his wife, Linda of Indianapolis, IN, Ray Chew and Tommy Chew of Crescent City, grandchildren, Jane Manzo, Paul Moore, Ann Rose, Susan Sayne, Karen Chew, Dianna Lopez and Kim Chew. Raymond was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Matthews.
