Obituary for Owen V. Sloan
Longtime Gold Beach resident Owen V. Sloan passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2012. He was 88. Owen was born on August 22, 1923 in Fairfax, Missouri, one of nine children to Joseph and Leonora (Littell) Sloan. At an early age he moved to the Cottage Grove area where he grew up and attended school. Owen enlisted in the US Army during his senior year of high school. He served for 4 years having aided in the liberation of a concentration camp in Flossenburg, Germany. Following his military service, which included 13 years in the National Guard, Owen began what would be a lifelong career in supervisory positions in the Curry County timber industry. Owen married Cleo Cash in Reno, NV on July 7, 1960. He was active in the Gold Beach community including being a member of the First Presbyterian Church for forty years. He assisted seniors with their taxes, served on the board for the local television translator system and the Gold Beach- Wedderburn Fire District. Owen enjoyed carpentry; he built three homes and completed numerous renovations for his family, including an upscale tree house for his grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing and feeding and watching the birds around his and Cleo’s home. He was honest, kind and selfless, and a wonderful husband and dad. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Cleo. daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ken Wion of Medford, grandchildren, Keri Papé and her husband, Jordan, Jessica Leach and her husband, Andrew, and Christopher Brueckner. Great grandchildren: Braden, Madeline and Eleanor Papé. Brothers: Ken and Stanley Sloan, both of Cottage Grove. Sisters: Mina Hassman and Marjorie Sloan, both of Eugene. Owen was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Cash Brueckner, brothers, Joseph, Lyndon and Lowell Sloan and a sister, JoAnn Cryder. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nancy Brueckner Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Sterling Bank, 29804 Ellensburg Ave. Gold Beach, OR 97444. A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Gold Beach, 29755 Turner Street in Gold Beach. Pastors Don McKay and Tom Tepley will officiate. A graveside service will follow at the Rogue River Cemetery in Gold Beach. Refreshments will follow at the Church.
