Naomi Ruth (Kessler) Smith Dec. 1, 1955 - May 9, 2011 Naomi Ruth Smith passed away at her home in Brookings from natural causes on May 9, 2011. She was 55. Naomi was born December 1, 1955 in Klamath Falls, OR to Paul and Darlene (Ripple) Kessler. The family moved to Brookings where Naomi graduated from BHHS in 1974. After earning a degree from Medford School of Business, she returned to Brookings where she began what would be a 36 year career in bookkeeping, first with Curry County Communications (BEECO, owned by the Garvin family) and, later with C&K Markets. During the last 9 years she worked part time at Chetco Inn. Naomi was a member of the First Baptist Community Church in Brookings. She also volunteered in different capacities assisting senior citizens. Most of all, though, she loved her family. Whether she was taking in an ocean sunset or playing with her granddaughter, Naomi found her greatest joy in family. She had a Godly, caring heart and will be missed by all who knew her. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Clara and Thomas Howell of Brookings, granddaughter, Julia Howell of Brookings, parents, Paul and Darlene Kessler of Malin, OR, brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Connie Kessler of Shady Cove, OR, stepchildren, Richard and Corey Smith of Portland, and Leslie Ross of Bakersfield, CA. A memorial fund has been established to assist the family with final expenses and with Julia's college fund in Naomi's name at any branch of Chetco Federal Credit Union or by mail to PO Box 3000J, Harbor, OR 97415. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Community Church on Saturday (today), May 14, 2011 at 1:00pm with Dr. Ken Whitted officiating. A reception will immediately follow until 4pm at the church. Naomi will be laid to rest beside her sister, Debra, at the Malin Community Cemetery in Malin, OR.
