Nancy Dougherty passed away at her home in Harbor on Oct. 22, 2011. She was 66. Nancy was born June 24, 1945, in San Bernardino, Calif., where she was raised by her grandparents. She took up dance at the age of 5 and, following high school, pursued it as a career, dancing professionally all over North America including Puerto Rico, Las Vegas, Reno and Portland. She came to Oregon in the late 1960s, settling in Cave Junction where she opened her own dance studio, Joy of Fitness. She married Timothy Dougherty in Grants Pass on Jan. 27, 1978. They moved to Brookings in 1982 where Nancy relocated her dance studio. She also worked with students of all different ages teaching dance and aerobics, including coaching contestants in the Azalea Pageant. In her later years, she became a certified nursing assistant and helped terminally ill patients in their homes. She also worked as a flagger for Freeman Rock. In addition to dance, Nancy had a lifelong passion for nutrition. She loved to read and study any material she could find on the subject. She also loved to garden, growing her own fruits, vegetables and herbs. Nancy’s interests also included various forms of art from sculpting to drawing. She also loved to travel and would visit her daughter in Hawaii as often as she could. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be missed. Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Timothy Dougherty; daughter and son-in-law Lacey and Mike Siopes; son Jason Ledford; grandchildren Dustin, Kayla and Jenna Ledford; great grandson Tyler Ledford; siblings James, John, Phillip and Frankie Chase. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 401 Fir St., in Brookings. Father Bernie Lindley will officiate. A reception will follow the service.
