Obituary for Miriam A. Yates
Miriam A. Yates, 80, passed away at a local care facility in Brookings on December 30, 2012. Miriam was born February 21, 1932 in Everett, Wash. to Franklin and Ruth (Fickel) Harwood. She married Fred Yates on November 6, 1951 in Seattle, Wash. They made their home in Lake Forest Park, Wash. Miriam worked in several different fields there including as a teletype operator, an insurance secretary for Safeco, an insurance clerk for Walt Lagerstedt Insurance Agencies, a police clerk, dispatcher and court clerk for the City of Lake Forest Park and finally as a financial coordinator for Mental Health North. She retired in 1995. Miriam was also a former president, secretary and membership chair of the Lake Forest Park Civic Club, former president, secretary and volunteer for the Shoreline Historical Museum and a volunteer at the Seattle Audubon Retail Store. Additionally, Miriam served on the Lake Forest Park City Water Quality Commission, Planning Commission and the City Council. She and Fred moved to Brookings in 2002. In Brookings, Miriam volunteered her time with Hospice and the Brookings Harbor Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include her husband Fred Yates of Brookings, daughter, Barbara Yates of Brookings, son, Stephen Yates of Bellevue, Wash and a granddaughters, Kimberly and Julie Dudman of Brookings.
