Obituary for Mary Delana Burns
Mary Delana Burns, 98, passed away unexpectedly on April 14, 2015. She was born August 25, 1916 in Geary, Oklahoma, to George Adelbert and Nina Delana Smith. She was the only girl in a family with seven brothers, so early on developed an independent and adventurous spirit. Her oldest brother put her on horseback with him when she was about a year old, and she loved riding from then on. Mary married Dimmon Melvin Burns in 1933 and in 1936 they moved to Idaho, then on to northeastern Oregon where they lived for many years farming and owning a cattle ranch. She loved flowers and always had a beautiful garden wherever she lived. She enjoyed sewing and crocheted many beautiful items including a bedspread for her parents. After retiring, they traveled to nearly every state as well as Canada and Mexico. They lived for a time in Arizona, then in 1997 moved to Brookings. In her later years she read over 100 books a year, and more recently was a great Mariners baseball fan and also enjoyed watching professional basketball. She loved keeping up on all the news and read a daily paper and the local paper from front to back. Mary is survived by her daughter, Nina Delana Hall of Brookings; son Dennie George Burns and his partner Lee Frederick of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina; son, Robert Dimmon Burns and wife Pamela of Missouri City, Texas; as well as six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful person and will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family. Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net.
