Obituary for Marvin Merle Miller
Marvin M. Miller, 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Brookings, Ore. on Aug. 28, 2017 surrounded by his wife and family.
Marvin was born August 30, 1928 in Kirkwood, Ill to Bert and Rheba (Haines) Miller. He joined the US Army in 1948 and served until being honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal on May 10, 1952. He lived in Missouri briefly before settling in Concord, Calif. where he began what would be a 28-year career with Crown Zellerbach. Following that, Marvin started his own computer business and operated that until retiring to Brookings, Ore. in 2005. Here he met and married Jean Cooper. He was deeply loved by his wife who will forever treasure the memory of their eleven wonderful years together. They enjoyed taking long walks on the beach, visiting with friends at Saturday morning breakfasts and attending the Brookings Presbyterian Church. His care and attention to Jean gave us all a glimpse into what true love looks like.
Marvin’s four beloved sons recalled that he was one of the kindest, most loving and thoughtful people they had ever had the privilege of knowing. He never missed a birthday, anniversary or family milestone and he was the legacy and keeper of the family’s history.
When Marvin married Jean, he adopted her whole family. He showed unwavering love and kindness to her children and grandchildren, and quickly earned the deep love and respect of them all.
Marvin was the family patriarch and held the strongest of family values. Always ready with a kind word, he looked for the good in everyone. He was a man of family traditions. Family camping trips and neighborhood barbecues were part of the fabric of his life. His sons noted that they will celebrate his life every time they walk on the beach or barbecue ribs using Marvin’s special recipe.
Marvin’s closest friends were his buddies from his teenage years. He did not have any siblings, but his dear friends Bill and Jean and Phil and Laurie and their kids became a special part of his family.
Marvin leaves behind his beloved wife, Jean; sons, Michael Steven Miller and his wife, Sandra, Patrick Miller and his wife, Nancy, Mark Miller and Matthew Miller; stepchildren, Lesley Garner, Paul Cooper and his wife, Margie and Lorraine Gutierrez and her husband, Larry; granddaughters, Elizabeth Lopez and Heather Sanchez; grandson, Christopher Miller; great grandson, Von Michael Lopez; step grandchildren, Marina Cooper, Andrea Gutierrez, Briana Gutierrez, Felicia Gutierrez and many more in England.
Marvin was a role model for his family and everyone he met – we will all forever love and miss him.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017 at Brookings Presbyterian Church, 540 Pacific Ave. in Brookings. Refreshments will follow there.
