Obituary for Mariam Smith
Mariam Smith, 67, passed away at her home in Gold Beach, Ore. on August 12, 2015. She was born December 2, 1947 in Urbana, Ill., one of three children to Charles and Anna (Richardson) Hawks. The family moved frequently; Mariam would live in Illinois, Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi and California before settling in Oregon. Much of her career was spent working in timber mills and homemaking. She moved to Gold Beach in 1982. Here she worked in the local mills, McKay’s Market, local motels and Curry General Hospital. She retired from the hospital in 2011. Mariam married Robert "Bob" Smith in Gold Beach in November of 1994. She was very crafty including drawing, sewing, or any task on hand and her imagination was extraordinary. Any craft project was her forte. She loved to spend time with her grandkids (many hours of grasshopper hunting, playing cars, baby dolls and princess adventures). She loved hunting with her husband. She enjoyed collecting items, any item she desired from cows, roosters, frogs, bunnies, Santa, monkey/gorillas, baby dolls, the list goes on! She was always on the very serious path of Bigfoot as well as being an avid Elvis fan. She always decorated and was enthusiastic of all holidays as if she was more excited than any of the children. Survivors include her husband, Bob of Gold Beach; daughters, Dorothy Bartak and Janice Jones, both of Gold Beach, son, John Jones of Port Orford, Ore.; three grand children that she adored and four step-grandchildren that she also adored and loved as her own; sister, Donna Noland of LaPine, Ore., five nieces and two nephews. Plus many great nieces and nephews. Mariam was preceded in death by her twin brother, James Bruce Hawks, brother, Robert Frittier; and her Mother and Father mentioned above. A celebration of Mariam’s life will be held in Gold Beach, on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 at Calvary Chapel Gold Beach, 29935 Harbor Way in Gold Beach. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
