Obituary for Margaret "Maggy" Brickey
Margaret Sue “Maggy” Brickey, 66, of Brookings, a longtime caregiver and former owner/operator of an adult foster home in Baker City, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Brookings after her third battle with cancer. The family has scheduled a celebration of life at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Brookings Church of the Nazarene, 1600 Chetco Ave., Brookings, Ore., with Pastor Mike Allen officiating. The family and friends will provide a meal afterward in the church's fellowship hall. Interment of her cremains will be later in a family plot at the New Pine Creek Cemetery, New Pine Creek, Ore. Mrs. Brickey was born May 18, 1947, in Redlands, Calif., to William John and Helen Mae Martin Derksen. She grew up in Beaumont, Calif., and attended school there through her junior year. She graduated in 1965 from Brethren Christian High School in Los Angeles. Soon after, she married Clare Frederick Hoover with whom she had three sons. They later divorced. She began her care-giving career at Benedictine Nursing Center in Mount Angel. She later was a private caregiver in John Day and moved to Baker City in the late 1980s, where she and the late Ruth Ritch established Birchwood Adult Foster Home. On Sept. 29, 1990, she married Dean Brickey, whom she met in a singles Sunday school class at the Baker City Church of the Nazarene. The foster home partnership dissolved and she closed the business in 1999. The Brickeys moved to property at Sparta, where they lived until 2006. They were members of the New Bridge Church of the Nazarene until moving to Hermiston for Dean's newspaper work. They then transferred their membership to the Hermiston Church of the Nazarene. Mrs. Brickey was an excellent cook and homemaker. A devoted quilter, she made quilts for her children and grandchildren, for many friends and some for the needy. She detested ironing, but found it a necessary evil. She was a talented watercolor artist. She loved Southern gospel music, especially the Gaither Homecoming concerts and music by Liberty Quartet. She also was a dog-lover and had three miniature dachshunds, Jenny, Tootsie-Roll and Charity. The Brickeys sold their Hermiston home after Dean's retirement in 2011 and joined RVs On A Mission, a lay ministry of the Church of the Nazarene that involves building, maintenance, disaster relief and compassionate ministries at Nazarene churches and campgrounds throughout the nation. They lived in an RV, traveled and worked in Oregon, California and Arizona before her health declined in 2013. During their last year in the ministry they were directors of ROAM's Southwest Region, which includes California, Arizona and parts of Nevada and Utah. Survivors include her husband, Dean of Brookings, three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Lesa Hoover, and Daniel and Crystal Hoover of Brookings; Michael and Katie Hoover of The Dalles; a stepson and his wife, Todd and Jenny Brickey, and a stepdaughter, Kati Brickey, all of Springfield; 13 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Helen Mary McNees, and a brother, George William Derksen.
