Obituary for Malcolm Ben Ogletree, Sr.
Malcolm Ben Ogletree Sr. passed away at his residence in Grants Pass, Ore. on January 29, 2014. He was 89. Malcolm was born July 6, 1924 in Portersville, Miss. to William B. and Lillie Ora (Ezell) Ogletree. Following high school, Malcolm served in the US Navy, first on active duty during WWII in the South Pacific aboard the USN Persepcen and then later as a Seaman 1st Class reservist during the late 1950’s. He married Vera V. McNutt in San Francisco, Calif. on December 15, 1945, where he owned a gasoline service station, then became a fireman at the Presidio for 5 years, then transferred to McClellan Field for another 7 years. Malcolm spent 18 years of his career as a Corrections Officer with the California Department of Corrections at Folsom Prison. He and Vera retired and moved to Brookings, Ore. in 1988 where Malcolm enjoyed all of the outdoor recreation of the southern Oregon coast. He was also active in his church where he loved to sing and be a witness to other people. He and Vera moved to Grants Pass in 2007 to be near medical care. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Vera of Grants Pass, Ore., son, Malcolm Ben Ogletree II and his wife, Lorraine of Grants Pass, his blood 2 granddaughters Nicole Lillie Erickson, Michelle Elizabeth King, and one blood great grandson, Peter Favaza IV, of Gloucester MA, 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter by Ben's marriage to Lorraine. He is preceded in death by his sister Ruth Morgan of Oroville, Calif. No memorial contributions are requested. A celebration of Malcolm’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Pursuit Church of the Nazarene, 922 W. Harbeck Road in Grants Pass, followed by a potluck in the fellowship hall. Private inurnment will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point, Ore.
