Obituary for Maj. Alvin J. Rosengren, USAF, Ret.
Maj. Alvin J. Rosengren, USAF, Ret., of Smith River, Calif., passed away at a local care facility in Brookings, Ore. on August 20, 2013. He was 95. Alvin was born July 21, 1918 in Watertown, Minn., one of nine children to Axel and Augusta (Vogt) Rosengren. He grew up there, in Paynesville and St. Paul, Minn. Following high school, Alvin attended the University of Minnesota where he majored in journalism. The U.S. entered WWII while he was in school, so Alvin put his studies on hold and enlisted in the US Army Air Corp. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII in both the European and Pacific theatres. Alvin served two enlistments in the Air Corp before it changed over to the US Air Force. He would serve a total of 23 ½ years in the military when he retired as a Major in 1964. Alvin was very proud that, during his military career, he served as a security escort for First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. After military retirement, Alvin worked in hospital administration in Great Falls, Montana. He married Rosemary Knight in 1962; they moved to Smith River in 1969. Alvin served as the initial administrator for Curry Good Samaritan Center in Brookings, as the administrator for Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach and, later, as the Director of Business Services for Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City. Alvin also served as the Executive Director for the Del Norte Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed poetry, cooking and traveling, including time spent in England and Japan. Alvin was a generous, kind, loyal and loving husband and father and will be missed. Survivors include his wife, Rosemary of Smith River, Calif., daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Jim Tofflemire of North Bend, Ore., sister, Elvera “Bee” Davis of Phoenix, Ariz. Alvin was preceded in death by his grandson, Phillip Tofflemire in 2006, brothers, Elmer, Walter, Leroy, Ralph and Jimmy, sisters, Evelyn and Gladys. A private interment with full military honors was held at the Smith River Cemetery. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family. Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net.
