Obituary for Lois Marion Mattison
Lois Marion Mattison, age 98, of Brookings, OR, died May 5th, 2017 at SeaView Senior Living Community after a brief illness.

She was born and raised in Sioux City, IA, attending schools there and graduating from East High School in 1936. She attended Wayne State College in Nebraska, earning her teaching credentials in 1938. She met her future husband Dale Mattison, while attending college there. Lois taught school in Iowa prior to her marriage in 1940.

Lois and Dale were married on June 10, 1940, at the “Little Brown Church in the Vale” in Nashua, Iowa. They lived in Ogden, Utah until 1944.
Lois and their baby son returned to live with her parents in Sioux City, IA when her husband entered the Army Air Corps in January of 1944. After his service was completed they returned to Emerson, Nebraska and had two daughters.

Lois and family moved to southern California in December of 1952 and they eventually ended up living in Mission Hills in the San Fernando Valley. She was a “stay at home” mother of three children, and did some tutoring for lower grade children. When her children were leaving home or almost through school she worked with her husband in running their franchise store (Western Auto) in Oxnard, California from 1965 through 1980.

They enjoyed camping in the national parks and motor home trips, especially in the west and northwest. They loved hiking the Oregon coastal trails with their friends. Lois was an avid reader who also enjoyed gardening, stamp collecting, quilting, and crafts. She and her husband loved their many friends in Brookings, and enjoyed their get togethers for dinner and cards. She made a mean apple pie!

The two were members of Trinity Lutheran Church of Brookings for 20 years where they met many treasured friends.

Her husband Dale Mattison passed away in December of 2010 shortly after they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, John and Martha Schjolberg, her brother Roy and her sister Ruth Reese.

She is survived by one son Jeffrey Lane Mattison (Marlene) of McKinleyville, CA and two daughters, Janice Jane Hackel (Jeff) of Ventura, CA and Merry Lynn Citarella (Joseph) of Brookings, OR, three grand children - Kristine Citarella, Colin Mattison (Bree) and Jill Mattison/Torres (Yann) and four great grand children - Valentine and Declan Torres and Eilish and Soren Mattison.

Since Lois has outlived so many friends, her family will hold a private memorial at a later date.

The family would especially like to thank the staff of SeaView-Bright Creek and Coastal Home Health and Hospice for their wonderful care and the kindness shown to our mother.

In Lieu of flowers or gifts please make a donation to Hospice or a charity of your choice in memory of Lois.

We celebrate the life of this sweet wife, mother, and friend, Lois.

Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family. Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net.
