Lois Ann Hursh April 17, 1932 – June 30, 2010 On June 30, 2010, Brookings lost one of its native daughters with the loss of Lois Ann Hursh. Born April 17, 1932 on her parents' ranch at Enos Rock in Harbor, Lois Ann was a descendent of the pioneer Gardner family and she lived an active and productive life during her 79 years in Brookings. While attending our local schools, Lois Ann became an outstanding basketball payer at Brookings High School, dominating the competition during her years on the court. After high school she began working in the family's Croft Lily enterprise. Later, the Warrenton Seafood Company of Brookings employed Lois Ann where she worked at processing crab and filleting bottom fish. She was well recognized for her gift in making plants grow and thrive, and her home cactus garden was a tribute to this talent. Lois Ann, following the traditions of the Gardner family, always welcomed friend or stranger and kept her door open to anyone in need. She married Samuel A. Hursh in Brookings on March 15, 1958. Lois partnered with Clare Price to open EZ Ceramics – a local ceramic shop – which they operated for 12 years in Brookings. She was a 40+ year member of the Rebekah Lodge and enjoyed gardening and cooking. Survivors include her stepchildren, Samuel Hursh and his wife, Roy of North Carolina, Ruth Peak of Brookings, Dennis Hursh and his wife, Phyllis of California, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Clare and King Price of Brookings, four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel in 2007 and a stepdaughter, Karen Hursh. Viewing will be held on Friday, July 9, 2010 from 2 to 4pm at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield St. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 2:00pm at W. J. Ward Memorial Cemetery where Lois will be laid to rest.
