Obituary for Lawrence "Mike" Sims
Lawrence "Mike" Sims passed away at his home in Crescent City on March 28, 2011 with his family at his bedside. Mike, as friends and family knew him, was born September 7, 1947 in Cincinnati, OH to Lawrence and Lucille (Rumping) Sims. He grew up there and spent his summers on his grandparents' farm in Kentucky. Following high school, he served in the US Air Force for 3 years, where he taught aircraft instrument repair. He was honorably discharged in 1968. He attended college and earned an AA degree. Mike was versatile. His occupations included: sales for Remington Rand, appliance repair, burglar alarm installation and repair, apartment maintenance and management, and massage therapy. On October 4, 1975, Mike married Valerie Hubanks in Las Vegas, NV. They lived in different areas of southern California. In 1981 they moved to northern California and settled in Crescent City in 2003. Mike loved to go camping and hiking and watching professional baseball games. Survivors include his wife, Valerie of Crescent City, daughters, Angie Schall of Chico, Mary Chambers of Washington, Sara Davis of Crescent City, Susan Dahl of Chico, 15 grandchildren, sisters, Sarah Groom of Colton, CA and Carol McDonald of Wildemar, CA. In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by a brother, Mitchel Sims. A celebration of Mike's life will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 11:00am at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield St. in Brookings. A reception will follow the service there.
