Obituary for Lauretta Ann "Annie" Phelps
Lauretta Ann “Annie” Phelps Jan. 21, 1933 – July 29, 2017
Brookings resident, Lauretta Ann “Annie” Phelps, went home to be with the Lord on July 29, 2017 at Coos Bay, OR. She was born January 21, 1933 at East Point, Georgia, the daughter of X. L. and Jessie Lee (Davis) Owen, one of five children born to them.
Annie grew up in Portola, California and Reno, Nevada, but moved to Los Angeles, California to attend BIOLA, (Bible Institute of Los Angeles). She attended three years at BIOLA, and met her future husband, James E. Phelps, while they were both enrolled in the School of Missionary Medicine there. They were married on August 6, 1957 in Reno, Nevada.
Annie and Jim lived in various places around the U.S., including Chicago, IL and Reno/Sparks, NV, before moving to the Brookings-Harbor area in 1968. Annie loved music, playing the piano and singing, and loved her church family at Smith River Baptist Church, where she was a long-time member. She said the highlights of her life were (1) becoming a Christian at age 19, (2) marrying a terrific man, (3) having 6 terrific children and 4) having 16 wonderful grandchildren and 7 wonderful great-grandchildren. Her pleasant smile, encouraging spirit, and fun-loving nature will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Annie is survived by her six children: Jim Phelps and his wife Brenda of Boerne, TX, Laurel Hupal and her husband Mike of Greenwich, CT, David Phelps and his wife Debbie of Brookings, Margie Corbett of Eugene, OR; Becky Montgomery and her husband Greg of Meadview, AZ, and Kathy Sloniker and her husband Scott of Brookings. She is also survived by her sister Margie Brown of Vinton, VA; sister-in-law Lois Owen of Santa Clara, CA; brother-in-law Jim Hurd of Colorado Springs, CO, sister-in-law Wendy Phelps of New Rochelle, NY, brother-in-law Dan Phelps and wife Linda of Bend, OR, sister-in-law Carol Mercer and husband Jim of Creswell, OR; 16 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim, brother Orville Owen, sister Ruby Roberts, infant sister Audrey Lee Owen, brother-in-law Clark Brown, brother-in-law Allen Roberts, sister-in-law Phyllis Hurd, and brother-in-law Paul Phelps.
A memorial service for Annie will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Smith River Baptist Church, 340 Highland Avenue, Smith River, CA 95567. Pastor Steve Alexander will officiate. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
