Obituary for Keith Laverne Patten
Keith Laverne Patten, age 70, of Brookings, Ore., died Sept. 25, 2014 in Brookings after a courageous battle with cancer and kidney failure. He was born Sept. 4, 1944, in Rock Springs, Wyoming, to Edward Archie (Bud) and Bertie Viola (Vi) Patten. He grew up in Wyoming, Colorado and Oregon. He met and then married Margaret Ann Weston on Nov. 22, 1963 in Gold Beach, Ore. They had five children that they raised together in the Coos Bay, North Bend and Brookings areas. The couple made their first home in Brookings until about 1969 when they moved briefly to Colorado. They moved back to Lakeside, Ore., for a time and then returned to Brookings with their children in 1977, where they lived together for the next 31 years until Margaret passed away. Keith most recently worked in the agricultural industry as a forklift operator, farm laborer and general “fixer” of all things broken. He also for a time worked in the local lumber/plywood mills in Brookings and Gold Beach. He was the manager for the Exxon Station here in Brookings in the early 80s. Keith loved camping with his family and working with wood to create miniature water wells and jewelry boxes. He loved working on and restoring old trucks and cars. He enjoyed all types of music, from classic country to rock and roll, and everything in between. He taught himself to use the computer to download music, burn CDs, and create labels for each of his CDs. He was an avid family man. There was nothing more important than his family and he always said that family has to come first and that family is not determined by blood or marriage, but by love. Keith is survived by his children and their spouses: Junnie and Michael Brown, Keith Jr. and Debbie Patten, Carrie Knudsen, Lorrie Patten and John Hopkins all of Brookings, and Dorrie Shaw of Rogue River. He has 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years Margaret; parents Edward and Bertie Patten; brother Eddie Patten; and sisters Bert Duncan and Jeri Reeves. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014 at the Chetco Grange Hall at 97895 Shopping Center Ave., Harbor, Ore. Please bring your favorite dish and best memories to celebrate with the family. Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
