Josephine Marie Hale, 87, passed away at her daughter’s home in Broadbent, Ore. on February 13, 2017.
She was born on the farm in Howard County, Nebraska to James and Marie Slaughter on Jan. 20, 1930.
Josephine "Jo" grew up in Nebraska – on the farm and later in Omaha. Following high school, she attended Clarkston College where she graduated as a registered nurse. Jo’s uncle served on the board at the hospital in Myrtle Point and recruited her and few of her fellow nursing graduates to come work there. Jo married Carl Hale on Dec. 8, 1953 in Myrtle Point, Ore. They moved to Port Orford and then to Gold Beach in 1960 where Jo worked for and retired from Curry General Hospital. She took several years off to spend time at home with her four children and to volunteer at her children activities from Cub Scouts to Mother Adviser for Rainbow girls. She returned to work after her children were grown. When she retired she volunteered with the hospital auxiliary for several years. She was an avid reader, member of the order of the Eastern Star and Soroptimist.
Survivors include her sister Andree Slaughter, daughter, Karen Hodge of Broadbent, Ore., son, Roger Hale of Eugene, Ore., daughter, Marilyn Miller and her husband, Joe of Bend, Ore., son-in-law, Ross Bell of Gold Beach, Ore.; grandchildren, Wes Hodge, Monica Leep, Tad Bell, Genny Bell-Turner, Ryan Hale, Aaron Hale, Jossie Hale, Jessica Gardner, Jamie Miller, eleven great grandchildren, Nikki Leep, Cruz Baldwin, Teigen Gardner, Jordon Turner, Tessa Turner, Colton Meyers, Carl Hale, Wilson Hodge, Chase Hodge, Alicia Hodge and Andrew Peterson.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Peggy Bell, former husband, Carl Hale, son-in-law, Richard Hodge, grandson, Josh Carl Bell, brother, James A. “Jim” Slaughter and sister-in-law, Barbara Slaughter.

A family graveside service will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017 at Rogue River Cemetery, Hunter Creek Loop in Gold Beach. A memorial service and potluck reception will follow at 1:00pm at the Turtle Rock Event Center, 28788 Hunter Creek Loop in Gold Beach.
