Obituary for Joseph W. Richmond
Joseph W. Richmond passed away in Gold Beach, Ore. on Sunday, April 22, 2012. He was 93. Joseph was born February 10, 1919 in Carthage, Missouri to Jerry and Pearl (Howard) Richmond. He spent his childhood in Missouri until entering the US Army Air Corps in October of 1942. Joseph served as a flight engineer aboard a B-22 flying 32 combat missions over Germany including two missions on D-Day. He was honorably discharged in 1945 having received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Bronze Star. He returned to Missouri after the war and married Mildred Vandergrift. They moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where Joseph would spend most of his career as a welder and machinist in the manufacturing industry. He and Mildred moved to Gold Beach, Ore. three years ago. Joseph enjoyed hunting and fishing in his earlier years. He also loved pitching horseshoes and going to yard sales. Survivors include his wife Mildred Richmond of Gold Beach, son Harold Richmond and his wife, Connie of Gold Beach, OR, daughters, Karen Umbarger and her husband, Kent of Grass Valley, Calif., Carrie Andrews and her husband, Bill of Ridgefield, Wash., Mary Katherine Whitley of Merced, Calif. and Vera Richmond of Modesto, Calif., brother, Ralph Richmond of Gold Beach, Ore., 15 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. Joseph was preceded in death by his daughter, Sherry Ellen Comer in 1974. A funeral service was held in San Pablo, Calif. Interment was at Rolling Hills Memorial Park in Richmond, Calif.
