In Memory
Joseph “Joe” Nicholson
Aug. 2, 1941 - Sept. 10, 2017
Joe Nicholson was a man who would walk to the wall with you, and carry the water all the way back. He came from a remarkable Ozark family of strong, intelligent, talented, and diverse individuals. Characters, in the old-fashioned sense of the word.
Joe was fiercely devoted to Laura & Joanna, and other members of his clan, of which I was
honored to be one. He was 19 when our lives touched and intertwined. I have loved him since.
There were four of us, Sybil, 1-year old Larry Jr., Joe and me. We decided it was time to forsake
Arkansas and seek our fortunes in California, so we piled the sofa on the curb, ourselves in
the old rambler station wagon, and hit the road together. California was, as another song reports,
“a brand new game.” Times were good and times were hard, and along the way, Joe bought
a little red roadster and took a fork in the road named “Laura”. Soon enough, Laura introduced him to Joanna, and he found the home he’d been looking for. Joe was an uncommon man, a great friend, and I miss him.
