Obituary for Joseph M. Mendola
Joseph M. Mendola, 76, of Brookings, passed away at a local care facility in Brookings on August 16, 2013. Joseph was born January 23, 1937 in Dunkirk, New York to Samuel and Sara (Guida) Mendola. In 1955, he entered the US Army where he served honorably during the Korean War. While in the Army, Joseph enjoyed playing football. Following discharge, he began what would be a 35 year career as a quality engineer with Boeing Aircraft. Joseph received the “Zero Defects” Award for his work on the B-1B Bomber. He was also able to meet President Gerald Ford during his work there. Joseph married Bette-Mae Eddy in Kona, Hawaii on February 11, 1987. They moved to Brookings in 1996. Joseph enjoyed bowling and traveling, especially trips to see family in the eastern U.S. Survivors include his wife, Bette of Brookings, stepsons, Gerald Fasold of Idaho and Thomas Fasold of California. He was preceded in death by his stepson, Jeffery Fasold. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brookings Harbor Food Bank, PO Box 1415, Brookings, OR 97415 or to the Chetco Community Library, 405 Alder St., Brookings, OR 97415. At Joseph’s request, no public service will be held. Burial at sea will be performed by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
