Obituary for John "Jack" Herbert Butter
JOHN “JACK” HERBERT BUTTER
May 24, 1940 – September 22, 2017

Jack passed away suddenly due to a heart condition in Medford, OR. He leaves behind his brother, Stephen Conway Butter of Olympia, WA; his half-sisters Georgia Ann Hughes of Clearlake, CA, Vicki Sue Holte and Linda Lee Little, both of Anacortes, WA; and half-brother, George Foster Landis of Sacramento, CA. He also leaves behind his girlfriend, Rosella Linton, of Brookings, OR. He is preceded in death by his mother, Louise Helen Landis (Butter, nee
Saunders); his Step-Father, George Francis Landis; and his biological father, John Conway Butter.

Jack was born at Providence Hospital in Oakland, CA. Growing up, he attended St. Peters Lutheran School, Brookfield School, graduated in the 1958 class of Hayward High School (the Agrarian’s), and Merritt College, all in the Bay Area. In his childhood, he attended St. Peters Lutheran Church under Pastor H.C. Theiss, where he was confirmed. He joined the Air Force and completed training at Boron, CA, in 1960. He was then stationed at Sioux Lookout Air
Station in Ontario, Canada with the 915th Squadron. In 1962-63, he was stationed at McClellan Air Force Base with the 963rd Squadron.

Having spent time with his maternal Uncle Herb Saunders on his hog farm in Tracy, CA, Jack’s goal in life was to own a ranch of his own. During college, he worked for Shell Oil as a service station attendant in the Marina district of San Leandro. He next worked for the City of Walnut Creek, before hiring on at Southern Pacific Railroad as an Estimator working out of the main office in San Francisco, from which he was retired. He had purchased 7 acres in Lower Lake, CA, for his dream ranch. He later sold this before establishing it in his retirement and instead bought property in Coos Bay, OR. He also lived in Brookings, OR with Rosella. Jack was known to many wherever he lived. He was a hard-working man all of his life, including working for his Step-father, George Francis Landis, as an Oiler for A & B Crane Service and Pile Driving.

In off time, he was a season ticket holder for the Oakland Raiders and took George to many games and Super Bowls. He also organized an annual fishing trip to Dunsmuir, CA, with his step-father George and half-brother, George, as well as many ocean fishing trips in the Bay Area.

There are no services planned – the family will hold a private remembrance in Portland, OR. In Jack’s memory, donations can be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or to a charity of your choice.

Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
