Obituary for John Ivan
John J. Ivan passed away at his home in Brookings on Saturday, July 31, 2010. He was 89. John was born January 28, 1921 in Columbus, OH to John and Pauline (Kolaini) Ivan. He grew up there and, following high school, began working for National Electric and Coil. While there he met Darlene Minard; the two were married August 7, 1948 in Columbus. In 1961, them moved to New Mexico and then to San Diego, CA before settling in the Hayward, CA area in 1963 where John went to work for Westinghouse Electric Company. He worked as a shop manager and salesman there until going to work for Reliance, retiring from there in the early 1980's. John and Darlene moved to Brookings in 1985. Known by his call sign, "Jivin' Ivan", John loved to fish the Pacific out of Brookings in his boat by the same name. He also enjoyed woodworking and camping. John loved to spend time with his family and was even able to hold his second great grandchild just months before his death. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Roy Candelario of Fremont, CA, grandchildren, Kimberley Carroll and her husband, Brian, Kristin Candelario, great grandchildren, Eric and Emily. In addition to his wife, Darlene, John was preceded in death by his sisters, Adeline Beck and Pauline Coughlin and a brother, Tom Mrenna. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 10:30am at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield St. in Brookings. Father Joseph Bosch will officiate. Interment will follow at W. J. Ward Memorial Cemetery.
