Obituary for John Gregory Hunt
John Gregory Hunt was born in Bandon, Oregon to Lloyd G. and Anella Hunt of Rosa Road, Bandon. John’s father was a longshoreman and cranberry grower, and John grew up learning to love the land and the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, water skiing, and boating. He and his wife, Sharon, especially enjoyed beachcombing. John attended Bandon High School, joined the Navy in 1962, and was a Vietnam Veteran, serving at Da Nang during the heaviest of the fighting there. On his return, John worked at Roseburg Lumber Company and Georgia Pacific for many years, but was injured in a motorcycle – car collision, which resulted in severe head injuries in 1979. Living on disability, John supplemented his income by wood cutting and other short term work when he was able. John married Nellie Tubb in 1962 and had one son, John Jr. Following a divorce, he later married Sharon Holland in 1975, and became step-parent to her two children, Denise and Joe. In his later years John was associated with the Coos Bay South Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Sharon and John took care of one another for over 30 years following his accident, until strokes in the old scar tissue caused him to be hospitalized and then moved to a memory care facility, first in Salem and then in Brookings. Sharon and his family visited him as often as possible, and John looked forward to seeing visitors and talking with Sharon on the phone. John’s health began declining rapidly, and two bouts of pneumonia within a month took him home to his Lord. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, of Coos Bay; mother Anella Hunt of Talent, Oregon; son John and wife Lisa of Myrtle Point; step-daughter Denise Cagley Unden of Salem; stepson Joe and companion Sunshine of Hawaii; sisters Peggy and husband Bill Goergen of Brookings and Nancy Young of Harrisburg; brothers David and wife Cindy of North Carolina; George and wife Rebecca of Missouri; and Rodger of Talent, Oregon. John also is survived by his aunts Edith Winters and Edna Paulson of Bandon, Eva Franklin of Florence, and Maxine Arrell of Walnut Creek, California, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and 4 grandchildren, John, Matthew, Tiffany and Kimberly. John was greatly loved and will be missed by all who knew him. A memorial service is planned for a later date.
