James Charles Dougherty, better known as Jim, passed away at his home on June 16th, 2024. Born on December 18, 1957, to Charles “Pat” and Georgia Dougherty, Jim was a life-long resident of northern Curry County. His sisters always referred to him as the “miracle baby” because his mother had him at the age of 42 and had also suffered the devastating loss of two
children previously: Kelley to childhood diabetes & Mary Lou to an accident. His childhood years were molded by trapping and hunting with his dad and older brothers. Judging by his stories he told, he spent a lot of time running around town and in the woods, like a feral child, living his best life. He was a 1976 graduate of Pacific High School, where he played football and
was a part of the band. After graduating he began his adult life as a ranch hand for the McKenzie and Waterman ranches, eventually becoming a sheep and cattle rancher himself. Ranching and cranberry farming kept him busy while raising a family. In 2002 he took over the position of government trapper for Wildlife Services after Tom Sheppard retired, and continued
protecting livestock and timber lands from predators up until his passing.
In 2012, Jim married Kathleen “Katie” Weber Dougherty. Jim and Katie loved nothing more than going on adventures together around the world. He was a waterdog and especially loved snorkelling in tropical waters. Hunting big game continued to be a passion throughout his life as well. I’m sure he’s still upset that he never drew his Bighorn Sheep tag. Jim also loved flying
immensely. He was an avid reader and pretty much any evening you could find him in his recliner with a book. It was believed that he had nine lives, having survived an ultra-lite crash into the side of Cape Blanco, had to hand combat with a bear, a heart attack, and all his brazen escapades when he was younger.
Jim was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He always tried to be a presence in his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting and school events. He loved sharing the outdoors with all his loved ones. His most redeeming qualities were that he was honest, hardworking, good natured and just truly enjoyed life and all the people that surrounded him, family and friends
alike. He loved with all of his heart.
Jim was preceded in his passing by both his parents, sisters Peggy Dougherty Horn & Mary Lou Dougherty, and brother Kelley Dougherty. He is survived by his wife Katie; sons Timothy & Angie Dougherty, Charles & Ashley Dougherty; daughters Jamey & Jeremy Knapp, Shasta & Forbes Jonasson, Lindsay & Randy Kirchgesler, Kelsie & Nick Randall; grandchildren Amy, Logan,
Tristan, Merrick, Daphne, Torin, Jax, Teagan, Autumn, Diesel, Thomas, William & Baker; brothers Daniel & Barbara Dougherty, Dennis & Pam Dougherty; sisters Kitty Haftorson, Janet & Mike Hessel; and numerous nephews & nieces.
