Obituary for Jewel F. Coates
Jewel F. Coates, 100, of Brookings, passed away in Crescent City, Calif. on March 16, 2014.
Jewel was born in Oak Point, Wash. on October 18, 1913 to Herbert and Lena Hickerson. She married Earl Coates in Monticello, Wash. on March 19, 1934. After operating cranberry bogs in Washington for several years, they moved to Brookings and purchased a share in the new plywood plant. Jewel also worked for many years in the cafeteria for the Brookings Harbor School District. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing beautiful flowers. She also loved to travel and go on walks into her late 90s. Jewel attended the Smith River Baptist Church in Smith River, Calif.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Robert Bob and Joy Coates of Brookings, daughters and sons-in-law, Starla and Daryle Norman of Central Point, Ore., Judy and Leonard Deel of Coos Bay, Ore., sister, Genevie Hampton of Olympia, Wash., and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Jewel was preceded in death by her husband, Earl and their oldest son, Gary.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Smith River Baptist Church, 340 Highland Ave. in Smith River. Private interment will be at the W. J. Ward Memorial Cemetery in Brookings.
