Jean Power passed away at her home in Brookings, Ore. on April 30, 2012 surrounded by her family. She was 81. Jean was born February 1, 1931 in Baltimore, Maryland to Francis and Mildred (Rogers) Firth. She grew up and attended school there. Jean received her Bachelor’s degree from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts where she was also a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society. She married Thomas M. Power in Arlington, VA on October 24, 1953. They made their home in Bethesda, Maryland. Jean worked briefly until she and Tom had their second child. She then stayed at home to raise their children. Tom’s work with the federal government allowed them to travel all over the world. In 1996, Jean and Tom retired to Green Valley, Ariz. where they lived until moving to Brookings, OR in 2004. Jean loved to garden. She had a green thumb and could grow just about anything. She also loved to read and was an excellent seamstress, making many of her family’s clothes. She enjoyed traveling all over the world including a recent trip to New Zealand. She was a wonderful mother; the Power home would often be the center of the neighborhood where friends were always welcome for dinner. Jean was also a devoted member of the Roman Catholic Church including local attendance of Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Tom of Brookings; children, Ruth Orem, Geoffrey Power, Brice Power, Alane “Amy” Hoke, Dorothy Marshall, Lee Dedinsky and Neal Power; her brother, John Firth, her sister, Mary Lee Prentice, and ten grandchildren. A memorial mass was held at Star of the Sea. Inurnment will be at a later date at Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland. Donations in memory of Jean Power may be sent to Star of the Sea Catholic Church, PO Box 1066, 820 Old County Rd., Brookings, OR 97415.
