Obituary for Jean Elaine Stump
Jean Elaine Stump passed away in the early morning hours on November 29, 2013 at the age of 90. She was born in Hoquiam, Wash. on March 23, 1923 to Valentine William Campbell and Beatrice Irene (Dunlap) Campbell. On September 23, 1939, at the age of 16, Jean married Fay Edwin Stump. He preceded her in death after 54 years of marriage. Also preceding were her grandson Fay Leval Stump II, and her brother William Valentine Campbell. She has one sister still living, Joan Elora Callaway of Davis, California. She leaves behind a family of four generations, from her two children Fay Leval Stump I and Sandra Gilkey, five grandchildren, Shelly (Stump) Corey (Mike) of Washington, Mindy (Payne) Baines (Dale), Larry Payne, Debby Payne, Roy Gilkey (Kathleen), all of Gold Beach and eleven great grandsons, four great granddaughters, four great-great grandsons and seven great-great granddaughters. She also leaves behind three sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Jean worked at many jobs during her lifetime: from day care, to waitress, dental assistant, office work to owning her own knit shop. She and her husband were joint owners of Fifty Fifty Charters along with a life time friend. In 1967 she and Fay bought the Crow’s Nest Tavern and operated it until his death in 1993. She was very civic minded at what project she was working on. Jean was a member of the Eagles and played in a marching band in the county fair parades. She also went door-to-door to organize and establish the first television translator system in Gold Beach. Jean initiated the first Project Graduation in her son’s Gold Beach High class of 1957. She also put on several style shows of knit garments. During her ownership of the Crow’s Nest, Jean would prepare family style holiday dinners each year at no cost to those who did not have local family or a place to have a holiday meal. All her family would join in at the “Nest” along with many others. One of her passions in later years was golf. Jean worked to establish Cedar Bend Golf Course in Gold Beach and became a lifetime, charter member. She also served on the course’s board and – rain or shine - never missed a chance to go golfing. Jean was always there for her family, employees and friends; many of them wanted to be adopted by her due to her generous nature. She was loved by all her family and many friends and will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Bethany Lutheran Church, 94190 5th St. in Gold Beach with Pastor Tim Brueckner officiating.
